Transfer for Dungarvan 10 Mile

The 'ever-popular' John Treacy, Dungarvan 10 Mile road race has been sold out since the day registrations opened on 1st November. That was 2,750 registrations in just a few hours. The organisers of the race, West Waterford AC have now put a transfer system in place, here are the details:

Thank you for registering for the Dungarvan 10 Mile 2018. If for any reason you cannot participate and wish to transfer your registration to another person, you can do so through the link below.

There is an admin cost of €5. Please be aware that you cannot give your number to another person without the event organiser knowing of the change. There are many reasons for this.

1. Incorrect results including gender, age and team results can be effected by a person giving their number to an another competitor.

2. For insurance purposes, the person taking the number would not be covered if the organiser is not informed.

If a current registered participant gives their number to another person without the consent of the race organiser, that number will be taken out of results.

Dublin Half Marathon to return to Phoenix Park

The Dublin Half Marathon Review was published today. This review was conducted on the back of the major traffic and travel disruption caused when the event moved from its traditional location in the Phoenix Park to Newbridge House and Demesne in Donabate.

There were a number of recommendations issued in the report, but probably the most pertinent piece for runners is the news that the Half Marathon will return to the Phoenix Park next year:

The Chairman of Dublin Race Series, Jim Aughney said: “We would like to apologise again to all runners affected by the delay on the day. This was the first year running the event at this location. We had a full and comprehensive traffic management plan in place.  It is clear however that there were shortcomings and we will take on board the findings to improve the Race Series for 2018. We will revert to the Phoenix Park for the SSE Airtricity Half-Marathon in 2018.”

I think this will be welcome news to most runners as, aside from the issues with Newbridge House, the Phoenix Park is more attractive for runners travelling longer distances. For example, in the past I've taken the train up and back, hopped on the free shuttle bus from Heuston, and generally had a really enjoyable event....which I look forward to doing again in the future.

Main Recommendations:

The report goes into a lot more detail about what happened on the day and how this could be improved upon. It also includes recommendations for managing other events in Newbridge House. The report was completed by former Dublin City Area Manager Charlie Lowe. Here are some of it's main recommendations:

 A baseline assessment of Newbridge House and Demesne, as a venue for hosting events, needs to be carried out.

• A longer lead-in period, with earlier deadlines for completion of Traffic Management Plans and Event Management Plans, needs to be implemented for future events.
• A protocol needs to be established for communication, clarification and sign-off for any changes to traffic management and traffic control plans.
• A Steering Group structure, chaired by a Senior Official in Fingal County Council, needs to be established to oversee similar large events held in Fingal.
• Below the level of the Steering Group, all ad hoc groups should be formed by the Steering Group with names, roles and responsibilities assigned and a reporting channel established.
• For events in Newbridge House and Demesne, which are likely to attract large crowds, a community liaison committee (CLC) needs to be established.
• A permanent slot on Joint Policing Committee Agendas for 'major events attracting large crowds' should be established.
• A review of the operational performance of each of the stakeholders for the Half-Marathon event should be conducted by each of them in order to identify areas where improvements can be made for future events of this type.

Dublin Race Series and Fingal County Council have pledged to implement the recommendations of the Dublin Half-Marathon Review.

Kia Race Series

A new race series has been announced for 2018, The Kia Race Series. This race series brings seven existing races under the one banner and adds a new 'closed road' event in Mondello Park. The series is the brainchild of Pop Up Races, who will manage timing for all the races, and will be the race organisers for the final event in Mondello.

Prizes:

The Kia Race Series will hopefully encourage more competitive racing in the elite field as there is a new Kia Stonic up for grabs for both the overall male and female winner of the series. To be eligible to win the series, runners must take part in five of the eight races including the finale. There is the added incentive of €7,000 bonus fund available for course records.

Elite runners across Ireland will be invited to all eight events with athletes receiving points for their finishing position (one for first, two for second and so on). The male and female athletes with the lowest points total at the end of the series will each win use of the car for a year.

Average Runner:

For the average runner, like myself, there will be a commemorative t-shirt for anyone who completes the series.

You can enter the full series for €125, or the 8 individually would cost €140.

Launch:

There was some high profile names present yesterday at the launch, with Catherina McKiernan and Mick Clohisey endorsing the series. I think this is a step in the right direction to hopefully encourage more competitive racing in the country.

Run Clare Series

In 2014 a group of runners in Clare came together to provide a series of quality races in the county, and the "Run Clare" race series was born in 2015. The idea for the series had come on the back of their very successful 10K race in 2013, the "Eamon Moloney 10K". From looking at feedback on these races year over year, and looking at what the organisers are providing for runners, this does seem like a series of races that you should strongly consider travelling for.

What is it:

This is 4 races over 4 months: a 5K, a 5 Mile, a 10K and a 10Mile. But each race is now in a different location around Clare, giving you the opportunity to experience some of the best of the beautiful banner county.

The 5k will be in the lovely village of Barefield, it'll be a great way to start the journey around the country lanes. The 5 mile takes you to the seaside town of Lahinch where the views on your route will be breathtaking. Back to Ennis for the Eamon Moloney 10k, where the urban location is known for its family atmosphere and fast, flat route. Finally, you head to East Clare and Tuamgraney for the 10 mile, you'll have spectacular views over Lough Derg in your last event before collecting your great finisher's gift.

What you get

The organisers each year strive to improve the quality of their medals / souvenirs / gifts. In an age where many runners will travel for a nice medal (a little bit guilty there myself!!), they certainly have some nice pieces for the collection.....check out the picture below:

Registration

I have put in the links for the registration for each race below, however, it's definitely worth considering the €70 option. Last year, around 700 runners completed the full series, but this year the registrations are already up over 800 with another 2 months to go. I expect this series is going to be hugely popular this year (and probably into the future), so don't go kicking yourself for missing out when you see others posting their pictures online!!
